Green Country Watercolor Society Scholarship Award
In 2008 the GCWS expanded its commitment to education and encouraging the development of emerging artists by offering a scholarship award. The scholarship is for college students at the senior or junior level, who are pursuing a Fine Art degree and have a focus in water media. Selection of the recipient is based on the merit of their art work and academic excellence. The inaugural awarding of the scholarship was in May of 2009. This year the GCWS scholarship consisted of a monetary award of $500, presentation of the artist and samples of their work on the GCWS web site, an opportunity to speak at a GCWS meeting, and an opportunity to display a painting in conjunction with the annual GCWS juried exhibition.

New Feature: Friends of GCWS Scholarship Fund
Inspired by the generous donation and pledge of future support by Oklahoma State University Professor Jack Titus, the GCWS has created a new addition to the scholarship program. Jack is giving a donation to be added on top of the $500 scholarship awarded annually, and pledging to continue the donation each year till his retirement. All donations to the fund are tax deductible and 100% of the money will be added to the annual scholarship award check to the selected student, and the names of all donors will be recognized in the scholarship application and presentation materials. No amount is too small, or too large. If you would like to donate, or to ask additional questions about the program, please contact the Scholarship Program coordinator, Jo Lynch at jlynch@intcon.net.

The GCWS is proud to announce the 2011 Scholarship award winner:

"Artist statement

Learning through different fundamentals of the art I have always been fascinated by the simplistic beauty that nature exhibits and amazed with the complexity in its form. I have strived professionally to reflect these natural colors, textures and compositions through my known media, Watercolor and Jewelry. Designing in order to engage the audience's aesthetic sensibilities. I am pursuing dual majors in both watercolor, and jewelry design and creation at Oklahoma State University.
To me, Watercolor is a medium that has always been transparent, vibrant and spontaneous. My body of work comprises of Landscapes and their forms in abstraction. I like to experiment with the colors, perspectives, and intensity of light, and forms that nature exhibits and alter them to the most simplistic and creative appearance. My idea behind doing this is to bring forth diverse color hues to the viewer that would transcend his/her instinctive assumptions about the content of the work. I like to leave room for imaginative interpretation. Although the subject remains the same, the intrinsic contents in the landscapes are portrayed in different manner. Exploring different pigments, techniques and perspectives, I think there is still lot more to be explored. I hope all my upcoming projects will continue to intrigue the audience and share a sense of understanding of nature's divine creations."
